Whistleblowing charity Protect adopts joint leadership model

The charity’s Legal Director has been promoted to co-lead the charity alongside its existing chief executive

Protect, the UK’s whistleblowing charity, is pleased to announce the appointment of Sybille Raphael as Joint Chief Executive Officer. In this new role, Sybille will work alongside the existing Chief Executive, Elizabeth Gardiner, in a flexible job-share.

Sybille has been with the charity since November 2020 as Legal Director. A qualified solicitor with more than 20 years’ experience, she brings both continuity and fresh perspective to the leadership team.

This change will enable Protect to meet the growing opportunities and challenges in the sector and drive forward Protect’s ambitious goals. The move is designed to strengthen strategic oversight, enhance innovation, and ensure Protect’s growth.

Lucy McLynn, Protect’s Chair of Trustees, said:

We are delighted to appoint Sybille Raphael as Joint CEO alongside Elizabeth Gardiner.  This joint CEO model will help us scale our impact, building on the charity’s strong foundations and pushing forward with bold, collaborative leadership. Sybille brings not only exceptional expertise and skills but enthusiasm and ambition.”

 Elizabeth Gardiner, Joint CEO, commented:
“In the last five years Protect has expanded rapidly and increased our impact.  I am looking forward to working with Sybille in this new arrangement and believe our complementary expertise will enable us to meet the next stage of our growth.”

Sybille Raphael, Joint CEO added:

“It is a privilege to take on this role and partner with Elizabeth at such a crucial time. Together, we’re committed to deepening our impact, empowering our teams, and amplifying the vital work of Protect.”
