Protect launch campaign ‘Let’s Fix UK Whistleblowing Law’ with MP panel debate: April 29

Protect will be renewing its campaign to update the Public Interest Disclosure Act, kicking off its ‘Let’s Fix UK Whistleblowing Law’ campaign with an MP debate discussing the importance of whistleblowing from Wuhan to Westminster.

Protect Chief Executive, Liz Gardiner, said “We need to fix the UK whistleblowing law which is 23 years-old, and out of date. Too many people from job applicants to volunteers are not protected. Too few employers are required to put any arrangements in place. And too many of those who speak out to stop harm suffer victimisation.”

Protect’s report, The Best Warning System: Whistleblowing During Covid-19 analysed the outcomes of  whistleblowers who spoke up about Covid-related workplace concerns – over 40% were ignored, while 20% were dismissed by their employers.

Protect want the Government to review and update the Public Interest Disclosure Act.

High profile whistleblower Dr Chris Day will join Dame Margaret Hodge MP, Chair of the APPG on Anti-Corruption and Responsible Tax, and Kevin Hollinrake MP, Vice Chair of the APPG on Whistleblowing, to discuss how relevant whistleblowing law, the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 is in protecting whistleblowers today and whether the UK is trailing behind best practice globally.

Protect Chief Executive Liz Gardiner will discuss plans to reform PIDA with Protect’s draft whistleblowing bill and share our latest research which highlights the confusion around current legislation and why reform is now extremely urgent.

The webinar, hosted by Garden Court Chambers, and chaired by Barrister Mukhtair Singh, takes place on Thursday 29 April at 9.30-10.30 am
