Policy & Research
Since 1993, Protect has been leading the charge to ensure whistleblowers get the protection they deserve. We've pushed for regulators, the police, and the government to take public interest concerns seriously and act on them. We work hard to make this happen by lobbying politicians, regulators, and anyone else who can help make a difference. We also contribute to consultations, inquiries, and publish our own research to keep the conversation moving forward.
Our work has played a key role in shaping public policy around whistleblowing. Whether it’s intervening in landmark cases like the recent Lucy Letby scandal, or supporting the creation of the Whistleblowing Directive in Europe, or standing up against harmful changes to the Official Secrets Act, we’re dedicated to protecting those who speak out for the public good.
A duty on employers to investigate whistleblowing concerns
This could prevent harm by making sure concerns are taken seriously, protecting employers, and reducing the devastating costs—both in lives and livelihoods—that come from scandals and disasters.
An extension of whistleblowing rights to cover all those in the workplace
The law hasn’t kept up with today’s modern workplace. Self-employed contractors, non-executive directors, trade unions, and others who should have protection currently have no safeguarding if they’re mistreated for blowing the whistle.
A simplification of the legal tests for whistleblowing to improve access to justice
Whistleblowing laws are complicated and hard to navigate without a lawyer. Simplifying the process would make it easier for whistleblowers to get the compensation they deserve when they face harm for their brave decision to speak up.
What changes do we want to see?
Our Whistleblowing Bill aims to provide stronger protections and wider scope for those who speak out in the public interest. This bill will create clearer safeguards for whistleblowers, ensuring they are fully supported and protected from retaliation. Our goal is to make it easier for individuals to report wrongdoing without fear, and to hold organisations accountable when they fail to act on those concerns. By introducing this legislation, we’re pushing for a system that values transparency, protects whistleblowers, and prioritises the public’s safety.
